The recent stalemate in Congress resulted in a government shutdown that nearly crippled our country and state. With just two members in the U.S. House of Representatives, Hawaii needs a strong, experienced voice who understands local and state government, who consistently holds government accountable, who asks the tough questions and who, above all, can work with others to get things done for America. I believe I am that leader and have the record to prove it.
I have had the privilege of serving on the Honolulu City Council, in the State House of Representatives and in the State Senate as Ways and Means Chair and Senate President. I know my community, I know the needs our city and our state. I will take that perspective to Capitol Hill, if elected.
This decision was not made hastily or without much thought. In fact, I initially announced I would not run. But after a lot of encouragement from my supporters, I have decided to offer my candidacy to give the voters an experienced choice for the 1st Congressional District.
My late father was a Pacific Coast amateur boxing welterweight champion. His influence and my Kalihi Palama upbringing instilled a fighting spirit in me. That is why I have been a strong voice and advocate for my constituents for the past 30 years and I will take that spirit to my campaign and to Congress, if elected.
While it has been a source of great pride and satisfaction to represent my constituents, I am most proud to be a mother. It is with my son and future grandchildren in mind that I have been passionate and unwavering in my service, so our children and grandchildren can live in a better state and better nation.
I will need your help to win this seat. I hope I can count on you to join my “Circle of Friends” and be a volunteer and, of course, to vote in the Primary Election on August 9, 2014.
